Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Lake Elsinore, CA - Despite a solid showing from the three Wilmington Blue Rocks who were on the team, the Carolina League (CL) All-Stars came up just short in the California-Carolina League All-Star Game played in Lake Elsinore, CA on Tuesday, falling 2-1, in 10 innings.
Wilmington's Mike Moustakas and David Lough each recorded hits though, while Blue Crew hurler Danny Duffy tossed a scoreless frame.
Lough, who made the team as the starting center fielder, wasted no time making his impact on the contest. The 23-year-old Clinton, OH native lined a single up the middle with one out and a man on first in the opening inning. The C.L. team wasted the early opportunity though, as back-to-back strikeouts stranded a pair. Lough suffered a similar fate in his final at-bat, as he went down swinging in the third. Lough exited the game after the fifth frame.
That was the same point when Duffy got his call from the bullpen. Duffy tossed a perfect bottom of the sixth inning. The southpaw fanned the first batter he faced, and cruised through the frame in only 14 pitches.
One inning later, Moustakas entered as a defensive replacement for Lonnie Chisenhall at third base. Moustakas got two chances at the plate, whiffing with the go-ahead run on first base in the eighth, and singling to left with two outs in the 10th. The California native advanced to second on Salvador Sanchez's single, but was deserted in scoring position on a Brandon Waring fly ball to right.
That would be the last batter of the game for the Carolina League All-Stars, as Derrick Loop allowed a walk-off home run to Jonathan Gaston to lead off the bottom of the 10th. It was the first hit Loop had allowed since taking the hill with two outs in the eighth.
The All-Star breaks continues for one more day, before the Blue Rocks return to action on Thursday in one of the most action-packed nights of the year at Frawley Stadium. The Phillies' World Series Trophy will be in the house courtesy of Comcast SportsNet and Teva Pharmaceuticals. Then after the game, there will be a spectacular fireworks show, presented by P.J. Fitzpatrick, Inc. First pitch with the Potomac Nationals is slated for 7:05 p.m.
