Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Salem, VA (May 20, 2009) - Every member of the Blue Rock lineup recorded at least one hit, Anthony Seratelli cracked a three-run triple on an 0-2, two out pitch, and Wilmington took advantage of countless Salem mistakes in claiming their third straight victory at Lewis-Gale Field, prevailing 8-4 on Wednesday evening in front of 2,661 fans in the Roanoke Valley. The Blue Rocks never trailed after scoring a pair off Salem starter Seth Garrison in the top of the first, and while the Red Sox persistently battled back, Salem could never hold the Rocks offense at bay long enough to complete the comeback.
Wilmington's Danny Duffy improved to 4-1 on the season with five respectable innings, giving up one run in the second and two more in the fourth. He left with a 5-3 lead, which the bullpen would protect thanks to three strong frames from Kelvin Villa and a scoreless ninth delivered by Brandon Sisk. Though the Red Sox pounded ten hits, Salem left nine runners-on-base and missed enough opportunities to drop the ballgame.
Salem's Seth Garrison was knocked around over four and a third innings, yielding five runs (two earned) on nine hits. In the top of the third, a Luis Segovia throwing error prolonged an inning as the Blue Rocks loaded the bases. One strike away from escaping the predicament, Seratelli drilled a triple to the right-center field gap, clearing the bases and changing a 2-1 nailbiter into a 5-1 tilt. Though the Red Sox cut the deficit in half with two in the last of the fourth, the Blue Rocks would answer with two more in the sixth, another of which was unearned due to Segovia's second error of the game. Over the past two nights, the Sox' five errors have crippled their chances to win, taxing the pitching staff as Wilmington has consistently capitalized on the Sox miscues.
Offensively, the bright spots for the Red Sox were the Taiwanese outfielders, each of whom totaled multiple hits. Lin, playing center, smacked a pair of doubles in his first two at bats, while Chiang, DHing on Wednesday, was on base three times with a walk, a single, and a double.
Following three straight losses, the Red Sox stand at 20-20 and only a half-game ahead of the second-place Winston-Salem Dash in the Carolina League South. Thursday's series finale, scheduled for 7:05, is vital for the Red Sox if they plan to avoid a sweep or stay atop the division. Salem will give the ball to Dave McKae, while Wilmington will counter with Ray Liotta.
