Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Salem, VA- Entering Friday night, Pelican lefthanded starter Edgar Osuna had a ERA of 7.94 and the Myrtle Beach pitching staff had walked 93 batters in 15 games, by far the most of any Carolina League club. But none of that factored in as the Pelicans rode six and a third dominant innings from Osuna, who combined with Tyler Wilson and Cory Gearrin on a 1-0 shutout of the Salem Red Sox in front of 3,973 on a hot and muggy evening at Lewis-Gale Field.
Osuna scattered four hits throughout his six and a third innings, and the Mexican southpaw struck out four without walking anybody. Wilson pitched two-thirds of an inning, getting out of a seventh inning jam. The closer, Gearrin, worked around runners in scoring position in each of the final two innings to earn his fourth save of the year, recording the final six outs.
Lost in the shuffle was a sensational performance from the Salem pitching staff, as Dave McKae yielded just one run on two hits in six innings. Derrick Loop lowered his Carolina League-leading ERA to 1.15 with three scoreless frames in relief, but the Sox batted 0-8 with runners in scoring position and went scoreless for the first time in 2009.
The lone run of the game crossed the plate with two outs in the fifth. Cody Johnson, who reached via McKae's only walk of the game, scored on Chad Lundahl's line drive double into left-center field. McKae retired the final four batters he faced to conclude his outing, but suffered the loss in his second start of the season for Salem.
The Red Sox consistently threatened offensively late in the game, but repeatedly came up empty against the Pelican pitching staff. In four of the last five innings, Salem had runners in scoring position. Each time, the Pelicans escaped unscathed.
In the last of the ninth, Matt Sheely singled with one out , stole second, and moved over to third on a medium-range fly ball to right field. Swinging away, Zak Farkes roped a ball sharply into left field, but its final destination was Cody Miles' glove, and the game ended in two hours and 17 minutes.
With the series even at one game apiece, the teams meet again on Saturday evening, a 6:05 first pitch with Salem's Eammon Portice opposing Myrtle Beach's Jeff Locke.
