Ports to Start Season with \'Battle of the Champs'

STOCKTON, Calif. - The powerhouse strength of the Oakland Athletics farm system will be on display before the minor league season officially kicks off, as the Stockton Ports will be participating in the "Battle of the Champions," a two-game exhibition series on April 7 and 8.

But the Ports, reigning champions of the California League, won't be taking on just any old competition for this series. The Ports will be facing the Sacramento River Cats, Triple-A affiliate of the Oakland A's and reigning champions of the Pacific Coast League.

The first of the two-game Battle of the Champions will be at Raley Field in Sacramento on Tuesday, April 7 at 6:35 p.m. The Ports will then host the River Cats at Banner Island Ballpark on Wednesday, April 8 at 6:35 p.m.

While the series is an exhibition, the pride of each league and the title of top A's championship organization will be on the line. The two-game clash of champs will also enable fans to see a high number of the top prospects in the Oakland organization, and get a preview of the 2009 Ports team, led by new manager Aaron Nieckula.

The Ports will open the 2009 season on the road at San Jose on Thursday, April 9 before hosting their home opener on Thursday, April 16 against San Jose at 7:05 p.m.
