Jyri Niemi Named to Team Finland for WJHC

December 4, 2008 - Western Hockey League (WHL) Saskatoon Blades

Saskatoon Blades defenseman Jyri Niemi, from Hameenkyro, FIN, will be representing his country along with the Saskatoon Blades at the upcoming 2009 World Junior Hockey Championship in Ottawa, ON. Niemi has appeared in 22 games this season, registering 1 goal and 8 assists for 9 points. Last season, as a rookie, Niemi recorded 14 goals and 20 assists in 49 games. Niemi is known for having one of the hardest shots in the entire CHL. Jyri was drafted by the New York Islanders in the 3rd round in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

The 2009 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship will kick off on Friday, December 26th with Canada squaring off against the Czech Republic and Finland facing team Sweden.

Dec. 31st - vs. Slovakia
