Altoona Curve News Release

ALTOONA- The Milwaukee Brewers today named Dale Sveum (pronounced SWAIM) the club's interim manager for the remainder of the 2008 season, making him the first former Altoona Curve skipper to manage in the major leagues. Sveum will replace Ned Yost, who was relieved of his managerial duties by the Brewers earlier in the day.

Sveum, who is in his third season on the Milwaukee coaching staff, had been serving as the team's third base coach. The Brewers are currently in contention for their first post-season appearance since 1982, but have dropped 11 of their last 14 games entering Monday's action. Milwaukee is tied with Philadelphia for the National League wild-card lead.

Just two years removed from his final season as a major league player, Sveum was named Altoona Curve manager prior to the 2001 season and guided the club to its first back-to-back winning seasons in 2002 and '03 and a first-ever Eastern League playoff appearance in 2003. He was named the Eastern League's "Top Managerial Prospect" by Baseball America following the '03 season. In three seasons as Curve manager, Sveum posted a 213-211 (.502) record.

Initially announced as the Curve's manager for the 2004 season, Sveum left the Pittsburgh Pirates to accept a position as the third base coach for the eventual World Series champion Boston Red Sox under manager Terry Francona. After two seasons with the Red Sox (2004-05), he joined the Brewers as their third base coach in 2006, moved to bench coach in 2007 and return to his original position as Milwaukee's third base coach this season.

As a player, Sveum spent 12 seasons in the major leagues with Milwaukee (1986-91), Philadelphia (2002), Chicago-AL (1992), Oakland (1993), Seattle (1994), Pittsburgh (1996-97, '99) and New York-AL (1998). His best big league season came with the Brewers in 1987, when he hit 25 home runs and knocked in 95 runs as the club's everyday shortstop. He was originally drafted by Milwaukee in the first round (25th overall) of the 1982 June Draft.
