Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ - The 2007 Atlantic League Champion Newark Bears have announced the acquisition of RHP Matt Petrusek from the Sussex Skyhawks of the CanAm League in exchange for future considerations.
The 25-year-old Petrusek comes to Bears fresh from nailing down the Skyhawks' first CanAm League Championship, hurling 2.2 innings of relief in the championship series finale. With Sussex this season, he compiled a 1.79 earned run average while posting a 5-2 record with a career-high 24 saves over 35 games. His save total tied for the league lead.
In the 2008 post-season, Petrusek appeared in all seven games played by Sussex. He was 1-0 with four saves and a 1.23 ERA.
A product of Lewis College (IL), Petrusek has pitched professionally for five seasons in 167 games for Sussex, Joliet and Sioux Falls as both a starter and a reliever. In 2007, the Tinley Park, IL native ranked 5th in the Northern League in saves while pitching for Joliet. In 2006 with Sioux Falls, Matt set a career high tossing 73 innings while appearing in 30 games, his previous high until this season. Petrusek will provide another quality arm for the Bears out of their bullpen for the remainder of their stretch run.
The Bears play their home games at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium, conveniently located off Route 280, across the street from the Newark-Broad St. train station, and just minutes from Route 78, the New Jersey Turnpike, and Garden State Parkway.
