Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Former Quad Cities River Bandits ace Nick Additon capped a breakout 2008 season by being named the St. Louis Cardinals Pitcher of the Month in August, while former Quad Cities outfielder Daryl Jones was honored as the organization's Player of the Month.
Additon, a 20-year-old lefty, spent the bulk of the year with the River Bandits, finishing fifth in the Midwest League with a 2.50 ERA while going 9-5 and leading the Quad Cities staff with nine wins, 108 strikeouts, 119 innings pitched and 19 starts.
After beginning the month of August by going 1-1 and posting a 14-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 14 innings (two starts) with the River Bandits, Additon was promoted to the Florida State League where he finished off the season with three impressive regular season starts for the Palm Beach Cardinals. In those three outings the Florida native went 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA and just 11 hits allowed in 18 innings, including an August 21 start at St. Lucie in which he twirled a seven-inning complete-game shutout in game two of a doubleheader.
All in all, that left Additon with a 3-1 record and a 1.69 ERA in five August starts. The southpaw control-artist held opponents from two different leagues to a .185 batting average during the month, fanning 27 while allowing just 22 hits in 32 innings of work. The strong finish was good enough to earn him the start in game one of the Florida State League semifinals, where he held Daytona to two runs over five innings in a no-decision.
Meanwhile, former Quad Cities outfielder Daryl Jones was named the organization's Player of the Month. The 21-year-old from Texas spent parts of the 2006 and 2007 seasons with Quad Cities, but began the 2008 campaign with Palm Beach and hit .326 with 25 extra-base hits, 35 RBI, and 18 stolen bases to earn Florida State League All-Star honors. After receiving a promotion to Double-A Springfield in late July, Jones kept on hitting to the tune of a .319 average with five home runs, 12 RBI and five stolen bases during 27 August games in the Texas League.
UP NEXT: The River Bandits have just completed one of the most successful seasons in the history of the franchise. Under new ownership and management in 2008, the River Bandits topped 207,000 fans for only the sixth time in team history and the first time in 12 years. With a renewed dedication to fans, sponsors and the Quad Cities community, the return of the River Bandits has brought a resurgence of support for the team. Season tickets and mini-plans are on sale for the 2009 season and Banditwear is available all year long at Modern Woodmen Park.
