Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Eric Harryman broke open a one-run game with a grand slam home run in the top of the fifth inning as the Oneonta Tigers defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters 10-4 in New York-Penn League action Friday night at historic Centennial Field.
Oneonta led 4-3 when Vermont reliever Jose Pinales walked three straight batters with one out to load the bases. Harryman then drilled a 1-1 pitch from Pinales over the left field fence for his fourth home run of the season to give the 8-3 Tigers lead.
Brandon Douglas went 4-for-6 with one run and two RBI for Oneonta, while Harryman scored three runs and Brent Wyatt scored two runs. Matt Hoffman (3-5) allowed three runs on eight hits over the first five innings for the win.
Steve Souza was 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Lake Monsters, while Marcus Jones was 3-for-5 with a run to extend his hitting streak to seven games (13-for-30) and is 8-for-14 in the first three games of the homestand. Jake Smolinski, Stephen Englund and Michael Guerrero each had two hits for Vermont, which had 13 hits in the game but also left 13 runners on base.
Graham Hicks took the loss for Vermont, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits over three innings in his debut with the Lake Monsters. Hicks, the Washington Nationals fourth-round selection, had joined Vermont after pitching in two games with the Gulf Coast League Nationals.
Both teams scored two runs in the first inning, including a two-run double down the right field line by Souza to tie the game. The Tigers added unearned runs in the second and fourth innings for a 4-2 lead before a Smolinski RBI double cut the deficit to one.
After Harryman's grand slam, Vermont was able to scored just one more run on a Guerrero RBI single in the seventh inning. Oneonta reached double digits in the ninth inning with RBI singles from Eric Arlet and Wyatt off Steven Stewart.
Vermont (33-41) will host Oneonta (32-41) in the 2008 season finale on Saturday evening beginning at 6:05 pm. A victory by the Lake Monsters on Saturday will clinch a second-place finish in the Stedler Division, while a loss will leave Vermont in third-place just behind the Tigers.
A reminder that Saturday's finale begins at 6:05 pm, an hour earlier than originally scheduled. The Lake Monsters will also be conducting their annual jersey auction during the game with fans able to bid on the green BP jerseys of all the Vermont players.
