Defensive Blunders Cost Spikes Game In 10-2 Loss To Muckdogs

BATAVIA, NY - Kyle McPherson provided the State College Spikes with a solid one-hit, four-inning relief outing Friday night, but the Batavia Muckdogs capitalized on the defensive blunders committed by the Spikes, and walked away with a 10-2 win at Dwyer Stadium. Half of the Muckdogs' 10 runs were unearned, with the Spikes committing six errors on the night.

McPherson provided a ray of hope for the Spikes (18-55) as he closed out the final four innings of the game allowing only one hit and striking out two. The right hander finished the 2008 season without allowing a run in last nine consecutive innings he pitched. McPherson recorded six strikeouts in the stretch and allowed only two hits.

The Muckdogs (45-28) took the lead in the second inning with Chris Swauger's two-run blast over the right field wall. Edwin Gomez provided a RBI-single to give the Muckdogs all the lead they would need.

After walking to lead off the third inning, Miguel Mendez put the first Spikes' run on the board after scoring on a fielder's choice ground out by David Rubinstein. Rubinstein's hitting streak was snapped at 14 games Friday night, the second longest by a Spike this season.

Adding to their tally, the Muckdogs scored three more runs in the third and an additional four in the fourth. The Spikes committed three errors in the fourth, leaving all four runs unearned.

The Spikes ninth inning rally fell short, with the team only scoring one run, but not enough to erase the deficit.

Spikes' starter, Ramon Aguero (1-10) took the loss for the Spikes after pitching 2.1 innings. Aguero allowed six runs, five earned.

The Muckdog's win went to Adam Veres (1-1) after the right-hander pitched six innings of one-run, five-strikeout baseball.

The two teams will face off in the final game of the 2008 season tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. All the action can be heard on the Spikes Radio Network, 95.3/3WZ, beginning at 6:50 p.m. Brian Leach (1-3) will make the final start for the Spikes in 2008.
