Portland Timbers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers head north to take on the rival Vancouver Whitecaps on Friday at Swangard Stadium at 8 p.m. on Fox Soccer Channel. The Cascadia Cup matchup is the third between the two sides this season.
The Timbers snapped a seven-match winless streak with a 2-1 win over the Montreal Impact on Aug. 16 at PGE Park. The win helped them move into seventh place in the USL First Division standings. Portland has scored a total of five goals over its last four matches, including three by forward Bryan Jordan.
In two previous matches this season, the Timbers are 0-2-0 against the Whitecaps and were dealt a 3-1 loss in their first trip to Vancouver on June 7. Vancouver claimed a 1-0 win over Portland in their first meeting of the season on May 24 at PGE Park. Defender Scot Thompson has scored Portland's only goal against the Whitecaps this season.
Since 2001, the Timbers have a regular-season record of 7-16-8 against the Whitecaps. In Vancouver, Portland has a 1-12-2 mark and recorded its only win during the 2004 season using two goals from forward Alan Gordon to earn a 3-1 result.
Friday's contest counts towards the Cascadia Cup - a fan-based competition between the Timbers, Whitecaps and Seattle Sounders. The team with the best head-to-head record against the other Northwest clubs takes home the annual Cascadia Cup. Seattle currently leads the Cascadia Cup standings with seven points.
A live broadcast of Friday's match will also be available online at www.portlandtimbers.com.
Following the match against Vancouver, the Timbers have a 12-day break until their next match on Sept. 4 against the Miami FC Blues at PGE Park.
