THE SAN JOSE GIANTS...continue their homestand on Thursday evening with the opener of a three-game series against the Stockton Ports at Municipal Stadium. San Jose won two-of-three games from the Visalia Oaks in their most recent series. The Giants claimed 4-1 and 3-1 victories in the first two contests respectively before suffering a 3-1 defeat in the series finale. San Jose has now won six consecutive series' dating back to the final week of July. The Giants are currently 31-21 in the second half - 3 1/2 games ahead of the Modesto Nuts (27-24) for the top spot in the North Division. San Jose's overall record of 74-48 is 6 1/2 games ahead of Stockton (67-54) for the best mark in the division. Only 18 games remain in the regular season.

Daryl Maday To Make California League Debut...Right-hander Daryl Maday has joined the San Jose Giants from Connecticut (AA) and will start the series opener Thursday on the mound. Maday has spent most of this season with the Augusta Greenjackets (Low-A) before a recent promotion to Double-A. The 23-year old leads the South Atlantic League with a spectacular 1.55 ERA to go with a 9-4 record. In 104 2/3 innings, Maday walked only 23 compared to 92 strikeouts. Maday did not allow a run in five out of his last eight starts with the Greenjackets. For Connecticut, Maday compiled a 1-1 record and 8.35 ERA in four appearances (three starts). Maday was originally drafted by San Francisco in the 30th round in 2006.

Matt Downs Leads The Offense...Infielder Matt Downs brings a 10-game hitting streak into Thursday's action for the Giants. During the streak, Downs is batting at a .442 clip (19-for-43) with nine RBI's. Downs' season average now stands at .310 - tied for sixth in the California League. The 24-year old leads the Giants with 15 home runs and has also collected 26 doubles and 21 stolen bases.

Giants vs. Ports 2008...Stockton owns a slim 10-9 advantage over the Giants in the season series. In their last meeting, the Ports swept a three-game set from San Jose at Banner Island Ballpark, July 12-14 (12-5, 18-7, 3-0). Only six of the 19 games played between the teams thus far have been at Municipal Stadium. Downs has hit six home runs to go with 13 RBI's in 15 games played versus Stockton while Brad Boyer is batting .435 (10-for-23, 1 HR).

English, Tanner To Also Pitch In Series...Jesse English is slated to make the start on the mound for the Giants on Friday night. English, who tossed five scoreless innings to get the win at Lake Elsinore in his last start (August 10), is second in the California League in victories (12). English is also fourth in ERA (3.09) and third in strikeouts (117). The left-hander has fared well against Stockton this season with a 4-1 record and 3.21 ERA in five previous starts. Clayton Tanner is expected to get the ball in Saturday's homestand finale. Tanner took a no-hitter into the sixth inning against Visalia in his last start on August 11. The 20-year old left-hander has won his last three starts overall and is now ninth in the California League with a 3.92 ERA. The Giants now boast four starting pitchers in the top 9 of the California League in ERA (Kevin Pucetas #1 - 2.47, Tim Alderson #2 - 2.99).

Stockton Ports...The Ports, an affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, enter the series in third place in the North Division with a 25-26 second half record - 5 1/2 games behind the Giants. Stockton just missed out on the first half title finishing only one game behind San Jose. The Ports have won four out of their last five games and are second in the California League in batting average (.279) and home runs (130). On the mound, Stockton is fourth in the league with a 4.34 ERA. Third baseman Chris Carter leads the California League with 34 home runs - eight ahead of the next-closest player. In 11 games thus far in August, Carter is batting .381 with six homers and 13 RBI's. Catcher Josh Donaldson, acquired via trade from the Chicago Cubs last month, leads the Ports with a .388 batting average. In 30 games, Donaldson has smacked eight home runs to go with 32 RBI's.
