Schaumburg Flyers News Release

Schaumburg, IL - Baseball can be an odd game sometimes. The Schaumburg Flyers scattered 13 hits against 12 for the Joliet JackHammers, and also benefited from four Joliet errors. Yet it's the run totals that count, and Schaumburg could manage only four of them in an 8-4 loss at Alexian Field on Tuesday night.

Schaumburg (16-27) saw their opponents jump out to the early lead, as JackHammer LF Doc Brooks (2-for-5, RBI) grounded into a double play that scored 3B Mike Caruso (2-for-5, RBI) to make it 1-0. In the second inning, Joliet (21-21) added three more runs to make it 4-0, with 1B Freddie Thon (2-for-4, 3 RBI) leading off the inning with a home run to right-center field. Singles by Caruso and Joliet C Nick Prosise (2-for-4, RBI) helped notch the other two tallies in the inning, and forced Schaumburg to chase the game.

For a while, the Flyers were able to do just that. RF Dan Maycock (0-for-5, RBI) drove in the first Flyer run on a groundout in the bottom of the second, and 3B Vince Harrison (1-for-4, RBI) did the same on a single up the middle in the third. With Schaumburg starter Steve Shippey (2-5) working effectively, C Lance Koenig (2-for-5, RBI) singled to drive home a run off of Joliet starter Aaron Trolia (6-2) in the bottom of the fourth, and suddenly the Flyers were down only one run, 4-3.

That's when Doc Brooks took matters into his own hands. He crushed a Shippey offering over the wall in left to lead off the fifth inning and make it 5-3. Brooks' run would prove to be the winning one in the game, but it was aided immensely by Thon's two-run homer in the top of the seventh. The first baseman's second long ball of the contest made it 7-3 at that point, and re-established the early four-run lead.

The most consistent member of the Flyer offense all night was 1B Chris Gaskin (4-for-5). He continued his recent hot hitting tear with four singles against only one strikeout. Unfortunately, none of his hits came with teammates any farther on the base paths than first base . . . and the only time Chris did hit with a runner in scoring position on second, he struck out swinging. It was simply "that kind of night" for Schaumburg hitters overall, leaving a season-high 15 men stranded in the game - but that doesn't mean they didn't try to rally for a second comeback.

In the bottom of the eighth, Flyers 2B Bo Hart (2-for-4, RBI) chipped away at the deficit with a ground-rule double to deep left-center that made it 7-4. On Joliet reliever Chad Fillinger's very next pitch to Vince Harrison, he asked for the team trainer and was removed from the contest. With the tying run on deck, it was a save opportunity for Joliet closer Tyler Meigs (SV 4), and he made the most of it. Meigs walked one Flyer and allowed two hits in his one-and-two-thirds innings pitched, but he also struck out a man to ensure the 8-4 win for Trolia. That final Joliet run came home via a double play off of Thon's bat in the top of the ninth.

Schaumburg will try to bounce back tomorrow night and even this series with Joliet. The Flyers will try to earn the second straight win for RHP Matt Varner (1-6, 8.93), while the JackHammers trot out LHP David Moraga (5-1, 4.61) to start. Alexian Field is the place to see it all, and also receive mini bats sponsored by Koukla's Pizza. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., so head on down to the ballpark or listen in to the webcast on flyersbaseball.com.

The Schaumburg Flyers are a member of the Northern League, a 6-team Independent Professional Baseball League established in 1993. Opening Day is May 15th, 2008. For ticket information call (847) 891-BALL (2255) or visit www.flyersbaseball.com
