Newark Bears News Release

On June 18, Newark Bears manager Wayne Krenchicki led his team to his 1000th career managerial win with a 7-6 victory over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, MD. Krenchicki, the second winningest manager in Atlantic League history with 661, has also won games in the Arizona, Midwest, Texas-Louisiana, and Northern Leagues in a managerial career that began with the Milwaukee Brewers organization back in 1991.

"This is a great accomplishment for Wayne," said Bears General Manager John Brandt. "Having worked with him since 2001, I take a lot of pride in seeing him achieve this landmark. However, knowing Wayne as well as I do, I know his focus is on winning the first half of the season and repeating a championship run."

Krenchicki led the Bears to the 2007 Atlantic League Championship in his first year with the team. Under his guidance, the Bears posted a 72-54 regular season record, a thirty-win improvement over the previous season. Determined to repeat last year's success, the Bears are currently tied for first place in the Freedom Division with a 29-22 mark.

"Wayne and Steve Foucault (his pitching coach for 15 seasons) have played a big part in the development of the Atlantic League," said Joe Klein, Executive Director of the Atlantic League. "Their ongoing management style has helped enable the league to get better each season. Congratulations certainly are in order."

Now in his 17th season as a minor league manager, the Ewing, NJ native has managed every season in the Atlantic League since it's inception in 1998, including six seasons with the Camden Riversharks. Krenchicki led the Riversharks to the Atlantic League's best record each season from 2002 through 2005, and was voted as the league's Manager of the Year in 2002. While with Camden, the University of Miami graduate won 70 or more games four times and brought the Riversharks to the playoffs three times, including a trip to the finals in 2004.

"To be honest, I didn't even know I was at 1000," said Krenchicki. "Hopefully it's more than I lost, and I'm glad it didn't wait another day."

The Newark Bears begin an eight-game home stand tonight, featuring a series against the Camden Riversharks and Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. For great seats, call 1-866-55-4BEAR or visit the Bears website www.newarkbears.com.
