Saltdogs Sign Lefty, Open Exhibition Season

April 28, 2008 - American Association (AA) - Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

LINCOLN, NEB. - The 2008 Lincoln Saltdogs take the field for the first time as a team tonight, as they head to St. Paul for the first of a pair of exhibition games against their longtime rivals, the Saints. Tonight's game at St. Paul's Midway Stadium marks the first of seven exhibition games ahead of the regular-season opener on May 8th.

After their two-game Minnesota swing, the Saltdogs head back home for their only home exhibition game of the spring. Lincoln welcomes the Sioux City Explorers to Haymarket Park on Thursday, May 1st, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm. The Saltdogs are scheduled to play just one other preseason game in Nebraska, when they play the Wichita Wingnuts on Friday, May 2nd at 7:05pm in Beatrice.

Lincoln also looked to strengthen its bullpen before the season starts, signing lefthander Mike Storey on the first day of spring practice. The California native was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 2004, and played in the Cleveland system for two years before moving to independent baseball. Last season, Storey appeared in 23 games (including six starts) for St. George.

The signing gives the Saltdogs 27 players on their spring roster, including one non-roster invitee, catcher Jake Ayers. The Illinois native spent time in the Israel Baseball League last summer, appearing in 21 games with the league champion Bet Shemseh Blue Sox. According to American Association rules, the Saltdogs can carry as many as 28 players on their roster until three days before the regular season begins, when they have to cut back to 22 active players.
