Burlington Bees News Release
Comstock Park, MI (April 19, 2008) - The Burlington Bees were unable to hold on to a three-run lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday and ended up losing in 12 innings. West Michigan evened the three-game series by winning 8-7.
The Whitecaps jumped out on top Saturday afternoon when Ronny Bourquin hit a solo homerun with two outs to give West Michigan a 1-0 lead. The Bees answered back in the top of the second inning by scoring three runs. Jason Taylor led the inning off with a single and stole second before David Lough walked. Clint Robinson then doubled to score both Taylor and Lough. After moving to third on a ground-out, Robinson went on to score on a Shawn Hayes single. The Whitecaps added a run in the bottom of the third but the Bees still had the lead 3-2.
In the fourth inning, Burlington put up another run when Taylor scored on a Jamar Walton single. The Bees then extended their lead to four runs in the sixth inning by scoring two more. Taylor led the inning off with a walk and advanced to second on a ground-out. Clint Robinson then tripled to score Taylor and then scored himself on a balk to give the Bees a 6-2 advantage.
West Michigan scored one run in the eighth inning before tying the game in the ninth. Leading 6-3, Bees pitcher Juan Abreu walked the first three batters of the inning. Henry Arias then came into the game but all the Whitecap runners that he inherited scored to force extra innings.
The Bees scored a run in the top of the tenth inning. Alwin Perez led the inning off with a single and Antonio Jimenez came into pinch-run for him. Jimenez went on to score all the way from first on a throwing error that allowed Mike Moustakas to reach base. The Whitecaps then answered in the bottom of the inning scoring one run to extend the game once again.
In the 12th inning, with Yensi Lopez on the mound for the Bees, the Whitecaps found a way to win the ballgame. With two outs, Adrian Casanova singled. After a hit and a walk, the bases were loaded and Lopez threw a wild pitch that allowed the winning run to score.
The Bees sent four pitchers to the mound and all four allowed runs. Starting pitcher Zach Peterson did pitch very well as he only allowed two runs on five hits in six innings of work. At the plate, Adrian Ortiz went 3-6, Taylor went 2-5 with three runs scored and Robinson went 2-5 with three RBI and two runs.
The two teams will wrap up the three game set on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 and the game can be heard on 1490 KBUR. Danny Gutierrez is scheduled to start for the Bees.
