
Kernels hold on for 2-1 win over South Bend

Tyler Johnson's RBI triple in the top of the ninth inning scored Efren Navarro with the eventual game winning run and Ryan Brasier allowed two hits, but didn't give up a run in the bottom of the ninth as the Cedar Rapids Kernels held on for a 2-1 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks on Saturday afternoon in South Bend.
The Kernels scored an unearned run in the top of the third inning as Jerry Gonzalez reached on a throwing error by South Bend third baseman Clayton Conner. By the time the Silver Hawks could retrieve the ball, Gonzalez had scored on the play.
South Bend tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI ground out by Evan Frey.
The game remained tied until the top of the ninth as Efren Navarro doubled and scored on Tyler Johnson's RBI triple.
Ryan Brasier came on and allowed two hits, but no runs, to earn his fourth save of the season.
Kernels starter Trevor Reckling allowed a run on three hits and struck out five over five innings in a no-decision effort. Chris Chambers (2-0) allowed a hit and struck out two to pick up the win in relief. South Bend reliever Evan Scribner (0-2) took the loss.
