Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- Brooks McNiven dazzled in front of the biggest crowd of the season as Connecticut squeaked past the Reading Phillies, 1-0 in less than two hours.

Phillies' starter Carlos Carrasco was good; McNiven was superb. In fact, McNiven threw five innings of perfect baseball.

The Defenders finally got the best of Carrasco in the bottom of the fourth inning as Adam Witter sent a towering home run over the right field fence to break up the monotony and swing the game in Connecticut's favor, 1-0.

McNiven retired the first fifteen men he faced as Connecticut's defense shined behind the lanky right-hander. The perfection was finally broken up as Lou Marson inside-outed a pitch into shallow right field for a single. McNiven regained his composure and got out of the frame unscathed; he threw a scoreless seventh to boot.

With their starter out of the game, the Defenders looked to their bullpen to preserve the fragile lead. Kelvin Pichardo chucked a scoreless frame in the eighth to make way for Connecticut's lights out closer in Sergio Romo.

Romo came into the ballgame four-for-four in save situations with a 0.00 ERA. He came into the ballgame untouchable, and on Friday night, he continued his brilliance. Romo retired the Phillies in order in the ninth as the Defenders returned the favor, beating a Reading team that edged them out Thursday night, 1-0.

The Defenders will face off against the R-Phils Saturday afternoon at 2:05pm as the series is knotted 1-1. Tickets are still available at ctdefenders.com or call the box office at (860) 887-7962 for further information.
