Bucks Strengthen Defense In Trade: Also Sign Center

January 23, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Laredo Bucks News Release

LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League traded for second-year defenseman Gord Burnett from the Youngstown Steelhounds Wednesday, in exchange for forwards Brent MacSween and Jeff Genovy. MacSween was then dealt to the Texas Brahmas for Eric Main.

"Trading guys is always tough", said Bucks head coach/GM Terry Ruskowski, "the two guys we traded are not the guys who caused the losses, but changes needed to be made to improve the team."

Burnett comes to the Bucks after having played in 36 games for the Steelhounds this season, scoring one goal, while handing out six assists. Burnett also picked up 133 penalty minutes, and was a plus-nine on the ice.

"Burnett will quickly make our defense tougher, he is a solid player", Ruskowski said.

Last season Burnett played in 50 games for the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL, handing out nine assists, while piling up 189 penalty minutes.

MacSween heads to the Brahmas having played in all 40 games for Laredo, scoring 11 goals with 10 assists for 21 points, including six power-play goals. However, most of MacSween's offense took place in the team's first 10 games, as he tallied eight goals and five assists in that period. MacSween has not scored a goal since December 14th at Corpus Christi, and he last registered a point December 22nd against Austin.

Genovy struggled with injuries while in Laredo, as he spent most of last season, and the first part of this season on injured reserve.

With the Bucks Genovy played in 53 games, tallying 10 goals, with 17 assists for 27 points, including scoring four goals, while handing out five assists this season.

The trade toYoungstown will have Genovy playing just 316 miles (five hours) away from his hometown of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

For full details of the trade, see the bottom of this article.

Also on Wednesday afternoon the Bucks signed rookie center Derek Legault (Leh-go).

Legault, who grew up and played junior hockey with Bucks goaltender Dustin Traylen, played in five games with the Tulsa Oilers this season, handing out one assist.

"Legault is a playmaker and a solid skater", Ruskowski said. "He will be a tough center iceman for us, I am expecting big things from him."

Legault was waived by the Oilers on January 8th.

Legault played four years of college hockey for Concordia University (CIS) where he scored 14 goals, handed out 23 assists for 37 points.

**Walker To 30-Day IR**

Bucks defenseman David Walker will be placed on the 30-day injured reserve list tomorrow due to a neck injury. The move will be retro-active to January 6th , the last game he played in.

Walker, who has handed out 10 assists this season, spent time on the 14-day IR earlier

this season.

Ruskowki still needs to make a decision as to what goaltender to keep as Dustin Traylen's backup, Kevin Beech or John Ceci.
