Erie Otters News Release
The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League kick off the 2007-2008 OHL Regular Season with a pair of road games this weekend in Windsor and Plymouth.
Friday the Otters open the season against the Spitfires in a 7:30 p.m. start. Saturday Erie travels to Plymouth to take on the defending OHL Champion Whalers in a 7:05 p.m. start. Both games can be heard live on FOX Sports Radio AM 1330 The FAN and on-line at www.ottershockey.com (presented by the James H. Cross Company) beginning 15 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
The Otters completed the pre-season undefeated with a 3-0-1 record. Ryan O'Reilly (pictured), the first overall pick in the 2007 OHL Priority Selection, led the Otters in exhibition scoring with three goals and three assists for six points in four games. Veteran forward Justin Hodgman finished with three goals and two assists in four games while rookie Shawn Szydlowski and veteran Jordan Skellett each collected a goal and three assists for four points.
Erie will enter the regular season with all but one of their players back in the fold. Nick Palmieri remains away from the team, currently with the Lowell Devils of the American Hockey League. The veteran Otters forward scored his first professional goal Monday as the Devils dropped a 3-2 decision to the Philadelphia Phantoms in an AHL pre-season game.
2007 National Hockey League Entry Draft picks Anthony Peluso (St. Louis), Luke Gazdic (Dallas), Zack Torquato (Detroit) and Josh Kidd (Los Angeles) were all returned to Erie by their NHL teams in the past week-and-a-half. All but Kidd (injury) are scheduled to play this weekend.
The Spitfires enter the 2007-08 season looking to recover from their first non-playoff season since 1997-98. Windsor's leading scorer from a season ago Bradley Snetsinger returns for an overage campaign. The 20 year-old forward paced the 'Spits with 29 goals and 33 assists for 62 points in 63 games last year.
Saturday night the Otters will be on hand when the Whalers raise their first OHL Championship banner since relocating to Plymouth prior to the 1997-98 season. The Whalers loaded up for their title run and in the process find themselves without seven of their top nine scorers as a new season gets underway. Chris Terry represents the team's leading returning scorer after collecting 22 goals and 44 assists for 66 points in 68 games.
The Otters 2007-08 Home Opener takes place Saturday, September 29th at the Tullio Arena when the Sudbury Wolves visit for a 7:30 p.m. start presented by Taco Bell and JET-TV. Don't miss the free pre-game party being held from 5-7 p.m. on 8th Street featuring the M-80's.
