Whitecaps to Meet Lansing in First Round

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps finished the regular season Monday in Lansing and will begin their Midwest League Championship defense with a three-game series against Lansing on Wednesday, September 5.

The Whitecaps finished with an overall record of 83-57, which is tied for fourth best in franchise history for total wins. They also led the Midwest League in hitting with a .268 batting average and were second best in team history behind only a .273 average in 1997. The Whitecaps championship teams in '04 and '06 hit .254.

The playoffs, presented by Steak 'N Shake, get underway on Wednesday, September 5 at Oldsmobile Park in Lansing against the Lugnuts at 7:05 p.m. before returning to West Michigan for Game 2 and Game 3 (if necessary). The first round series will be the following...

Game 1 - Wednesday, September 5, West Michigan at Lansing, 7:05 P.M.

Game 2 - Thursday, September 6, Lansing at West Michigan, 7:00 P.M.

Game 3 - Friday, September 7, Lansing at West Michigan (IF NECESSARY), 7:00 P.M.

LHP Duane Below (13-5, 2.97) is scheduled to start Game 1 against Lansing's RHP Julio Pinto (3-4, 4.21) while RHP Matt O'Brien (7-2, 2.19) is slated for Game 2 for the Whitecaps against RHP Adrian Martin (2-2, 0.83).

Thursday's home playoff game at Fifth Third Ballpark will feature plenty of entertainment besides the playoff action. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a Kenny Rogers bobblehead with four lucky fans getting the bobblehead with an authentic autograph from Rogers. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. for Thursday's game.

Fans will be allowed to play catch on the field prior to the game from 6:15-6:30. There will also be a Farm Bureau Insurance fireworks show following the Whitecaps game and then a post-game show with the band Domestic Problems. The post-game show will require a special ticket, which can be purchased for $12 and will include admission to the Miller Lite House Deck for the game and concert.
