New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- David Smith went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI and scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning, but Rashad Eldridge hit a two-run home run -the RELCO Enlightening Play of the Game- in the top of the ninth inning to lift the New Britain Rock Cats over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 8-7, Monday afternoon at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
Smith raced home from second base on Trevor Plouffe's two-out fielding error in the Fisher Cats' three-run eighth inning, giving New Hampshire (55-53) a short-lived 7-6 lead. Earlier in the inning, Ryan Patterson (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) erased New Britain's 6-4 lead with a two-run home run, his 14th, off Tim Lahey that sailed over the right field wall.
Following Rob Cosby's pinch-hit single, Manny Mayorson's grounder was misplayed by Plouffe, allowing Smith to score all the way from second base.
But New Britain (50-54) rebounded in the ninth inning against Seth Overbey when Eldridge (3-for-5, HR, 2 RBI, 3 R) took a 3-1 pitch deep over the fence in right-centerfield for his fifth home run, a two-run blast that also scored Matt Allegra (2-for-4, 2 R), who led off the inning with a single.
It was the first homer allowed by Overbey (2-2) all season.
After blowing a save opportunity in the eighth inning, Lahey (8-3) worked around a Sergio Santos (2-for-4, 2B, RBI, BB) leadoff single and a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning to notch the win when Smith flied out to deep centerfield for the final out.
The Rock Cats scored first for the sixth straight game in the series on doubles from Plouffe and Matt Moses (1-for-4, 2B, RBI) in the first inning against Kyle Yates, giving New Britain a 1-0 lead.
The Fisher Cats tied the game, 1-1, on Smith's run-scoring single in the bottom of the second against Anthony Swarzak, plating Chip Cannon (1-for-3, 3 R, 2 BB).
Smith drove in Cannon again with a fourth-inning double to right-centerfield, giving New Hampshire a 2-1 lead.
Plouffe (2-for-4, HR, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R) took Yates into the Poultry Products Dinner in the Den with a three-run home run, his eighth, that supplied the Rock Cats with a 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning.
Aaron Mathews and Santos hit back-to-back doubles off Swarzak in the sixth inning, cutting the New Britain lead to 4-3.
A Yates' throwing error and a Garrett Guzman sacrifice fly brought home two more runs in the seventh, as the Rock Cats built a 6-3 lead.
Erik Kratz (1-for-4, HR, RBI) began the Fisher Cats' rally with his second home run of the season, a solo shot over the rightfield wall in the seventh inning that cut New Britain's lead to 6-4. It was Kratz's first home run since April 7 (Opening Day), which also came against Swarzak.
New Hampshire falls 1 1/2 games behind Portland for the second playoff spot in the Eastern League's Northern Division following a split of the six-game series with New Britain, which trails the Sea Dogs by 3 1/2 games.
The Fisher Cats begin a six-game road trip at Commerce Bank Park in Harrisburg against the Senators Tuesday night at 6:35pm when left-hander Eric Fowler (3-3, 5.97) pitches against Harrisburg lefty Michael Hinckley (9-8, 5.43). Radio coverage begins at 6:15pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network (610-AM, Manchester; 930-AM, Rochester; 1540-AM, Exeter) with Mike Murphy.
