Battery to face MLS champs in US Open Cup

Charleston, SC. The USL First Division Charleston Battery will face current Major League Soccer champions, the Houston Dynamo in the third round of the US Open Cup. The game will be played at Blackbaud Stadium, Daniel Island on Tuesday, July 10; gates open at 6:30 PM with kick off set for 7:30 PM ($10 - $18, 971-GOAL / www.charlestonbattery.com).

The Battery advanced to the third round with a 1-0 win versus the El Paso Patriots on June 26; defender Anthony Catalano scored the game-winner.

Eight Major League Soccer teams qualified for this year's tournament and all enter the competition in this round; the Dynamo received an automatic berth as the current MLS champions. Houston are the current Major League Soccer Champions, their roster includes US national teams players Brian Ching and Ricardo Clark. It also features Canadian national team forward Dwayne DeRosario and goalkeeper Pat Onstad.

The Houston Dynamo has been the dominant side in Major League Soccer over the past several seasons winning MLS Cup in 2005 & 2006. The Dynamo has also won the Carolina Challenge Cup for the past three seasons (2004 as the San Jose Earthquakes). The Battery tied Houston 1-1 in March during this year's pre-season tournament.

The winner of the third round fixture on July 10 at Blackbaud stadium will earn a spot in the quarter finals of the Open Cup versus the winner of the Atlanta Silverbacks (USL 1) vs. Dallas FC (MLS) match-up.

The Battery was knocked out of the US Open Cup in 2006 on PK's by MLS's FC Dallas. Had Charleston defeated Dallas it would have faced Houston in the quarterfinals. The Dynamo exited the tournament in the semifinals, losing 3-1 to the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation's National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.

At stake in the tournament is $180,000 in prize money broken down as follows: $100,000 to the champion, $50,000 to the runner up and $10,000 to the team which advances deepest in the tournament from each of the Division II, Division III and amateur levels.
