Eastern League Announces Weekly Award Winners

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the Major League Baseball Advanced Media selections for the Eastern League Pitcher and Player of the Week for the week ending June 10th:

New Britain Rock Cats second baseman/outfielder Luke Hughes has been named the Eastern League's Player of the Week for the week ending June 10th. The 22-year old had an outstanding week for the Rock Cats, batting .650 (13-for-20) with five doubles, one home run, six runs scored, three RBI, one walk and a 1.050 slugging percentage in five games. Hughes, a native of Perth, Australia, had multiple hits in four out of the five games he played in for the Rock Cats last week, including going 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored against Altoona last Thursday. In 31 games for the Rock Cats this year the 6'0", 190 lb. slugger is hitting .349 (37-for-106) with 10 doubles, one triple, three home runs, 23 runs scored and 15 RBI. Luke, who had a streak of 11 straight at bats where he reached base during the week, was signed by the Minnesota Twins as a non-drafted free agent on July 19, 2002.

Reid Santos, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Akron Aeros, is the Eastern League's Pitcher of the Week for the week ending June 10th. The 6'1", 170 lb. hurler made a pair of starts for the Aeros last week and went 1-0 with five strikeouts and a 0.90 ERA. Santos made his first start of the week against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at New Britain Stadium last Tuesday and gave up one run on four hits while striking out two batters in five innings of work to earn his third victory of the season. The 24-year old was equally impressive in his second appearance of the week, surrendering only two hits while striking out three and walking two in five shutout innings at home against Portland on Sunday. Santos moved to the starting rotation for Akron on May 30th and is 1-1 with a 1.84 ERA in three games. Reid, a native of Kaneohe, HI, was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 13th round of the 2002 draft out of Saddleback Junior College.
