Arizona Sundogs News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Arizona Sundogs Hockey Club looked to close out its opening round playoff series Tuesday night against the Corpus Christi Rayz at the American Bank Center in South Texas. The Sundogs came into Tuesday night's contest with a 3-2 series lead but with Laredo and New Mexico both advancing in their respective series Monday night, the Sundogs and Rayz are guaranteed second round berths. In a battle for second round seeding, the Rayz would top the Sundogs 3-2 forcing a game seven scheduled for Wednesday night.
In the first period Corpus Christi would be the only club to score converting on its first power play chance of the night on a goal by Todd Paul from Geno Parrish and Kevin Watters at the 8:09 mark to take a 1-0 lead.
Just 2:52 into the middle period the Rayz would take a two-goal lead as a Jason Baird wrist shot would find the back of the net past a screened Mike Wall. Watters and Matt Turek would collect assists on the Rayz second marker. The Sundogs would cut into the Rayz two-goal lead at 16:25 of the second as David Svagrovsky would skate down the sideboards and rip a slap shot from the top of the circle past Corpus netminder Ron Vogel with Ladislav Kouba and David Lizotte tallying helpers to close out scoring in the middle frame.
At 4:38 of the third period Arizona would tie the game at two goals apiece as Brent Kelly would grab his league-leading seventh goal of the playoffs off a Cory Stillman rebound. Line mate Ryan Steeves would also pick up an assist on the game-tying goal. With less than two minutes to play the Rayz would regain a one-goal lead. Watters would grab his first goal and third point of the night at the 18:18 mark as he would bank a shot from behind the net off a Sundogs player and over the line. Turek and Adam Powell would notch assists on the game winning goal.
Sundogs netminder Mike Wall would block 25 of 28 shots in the 3-2 loss while Ron Vogel would backstop the Rayz in the win deflecting 28 of 30 shots. Arizona's second-ranked power play would be held scoreless on nine chances while the Rayz would convert on one of five opportunities. Arizona continued its shot dominance in the series outshooting Corpus 38-28. The two teams face off again tomorrow in Game 7 of the series. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:05pm Arizona time but will be tape delayed until 7:00pm on 96.7 FM The Wolf, the Official Broadcast Home of the Arizona Sundogs.
