MILWAUKEE, WI (March 22, 2007)-- Studying to become a teacher, former Wave keeper Dan Green figured his professional soccer days were in the past.
But a fluke injury to current starter Nick Vorberg during a Tuesday morning practice - along with Green's devotion to the franchise with which he won three league championships - brought him out of retirement this week to help the Wave on their stretch drive.
Vorberg, with a 13-11 record in 24 starts in 2006-07, strained his calf during workouts Tuesday and has been placed on injured reserve. With the team's other keeper, Brett Phillips, nursing a wrist injury that has held him out of practice and games, Green was called back to duty by Wave Head Coach Keith Tozer this week.
Green, 34, is a 6-foot-1, 205-pounder who is a native of Waukesha. He is third all-time among Wave goalkeepers with 83 games played - passed this season, ironically, by Vorberg (93 games). He also is fourth in minutes played and fourth in saves.
After Vorberg's injury, Wave Goalkeeper Coach Mark Litton e-mailed Green's wife, who relayed the message. After some family discussion, Green agreed to come to the Wave's aid.
"To come back and try to help the team, whatever my role might be, I'm glad to do," Green said Wednesday. "I owe this organization quite a bit."
Tozer said despite the bad break, having Green nearby is a stroke of good fortune.
"All of us are really concerned regarding Nick's season-ending injury," Tozer said. "Especially at a time when he was playing so well and we had gotten back in the playoff hunt.
"We're fortunate to have Dan Green available for us. He's fit, he knows our system and he's won championships with the Wave."
Phillips, the MISL Goalkeeper of the Year in 2005-06, is 0-2 since joining the Wave last month. He was obtained from St. Louis in the Steamers' dispersal draft and spent most of this year recovering from shoulder surgery. He suffered the recent wrist injury on March 2 in Detroit during pre-game warm-ups.
