Nava's eight RBI completes late Bears comeback

NEWARK, NJ - September 20, 2006 - Trailing 8-5 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Bears third baseman Lipso Nava hit a three-run home run in the seventh to tie the game at 8, and a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth to defeat the Camden Riversharks 12-8 Wednesday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With the win, the Bears have won two straight.
Nava finished the game 4-for-5 with his sixth and seventh home runs of the season, an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning, two runs scored, and eight RBI, which ties the Bears all-time record for RBI's in a game set by Keith Thomas on August 16, 1998 in Atlantic City.
With the Bears ahead 5-1, the Riversharks scored seven runs in the top of the seventh highlighted by a three-run home run by shortstop Matt DeMarco, his fourth of the season, to put Camden ahead 8-5.
For the Bears, right-fielder Nick Steppe went 2-for-3 with a walk, two-run single in the first inning, and an RBI double in the bottom of the third inning, and left-fielder Jonathan Thomas hit his first professional career home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Catcher John Pacot led Camden with three hits including and RBI single in the second inning, and an RBI double in the seventh.
Jeremy Hill (7-5) picked up the victory with 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief allowing only one hit striking out one, while Mark Ion (4-2) took the loss allowing four runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings. Bears starter David Shepard received a no decision striking out a season high seven batters in six innings allowing three runs on six hits.
The Bears will complete the 2006 home schedule with game two of the two-game set against the Riversharks Thursday evening at The Den with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm. Gates open at 5:35 pm to Fan Appreciation Night featuring a post-game fireworks spectacular presented by IDT. All fans who present any unused ticket or a bear claw at the Bears box office will receive a FREE box seat to the game. All fans 21 and older will have the opportunity to enjoy $1 drafts until first pitch. In addition the Bears are offering a 20% discount on all merchandise in the Bears Merchandise Store.
