After Three Successful Seasons Pelicans Manager Bernie Carbo Moves On

February 2, 2006 - American Association (AA)
Pensacola Pelicans News Release

The Pelicans announced today that Field Manager Bernie Carbo has resigned from all duties involving the Pensacola Pelicans.

After three seasons of successfully leading his team to the post season, Carbo will now return full time to Diamond Club Ministries, the organization he formed in 1993 to teach kids and adults about the greatest game ever played and the greatest story ever told - that of salvation.

"I have given this much thought and prayer and believe that God has called me to return to full-time work in the Diamond Club Ministries," said Carbo.

"We very much appreciate Bernie's contributions and his wife Tammy's support," said Pelicans owner Quint Studer. "We're saddened by his departure but we're not surprised as we have been talking with Bernie for a long time and were aware of his desire to go full time in the Diamond Club Ministries when the moment was right. We'll always consider Bernie as part of the Pelicans' organization and look forward to seeing him at the ballpark this season. The door is always open. We support his decision."

In Carbo's three seasons as the field manager, he compiled a record of 150-103, a winning percentage of .593, a spectacular run which included the league's best record once and second best records twice.

In addition to his leadership on the field, Carbo could often be seen in the community speaking to civic groups, youth groups, playing mini-golf for charity, visiting children's hospitals or teaching one of the many clinics the Pelicans hold throughout the year. He never left the stadium until he talked to every fan waiting and was a true role model for the team and the community.

"I wish all the best for the future of the Pelicans," added Carbo.

Focus will now begin to find the next Pelicans field manager while the signing of players and the building of the team continues.

"Because baseball is a small world, people knew there was a possibility that Bernie would be going full-time into the Diamond Club Ministries, said Pelicans General Manager George Stavrenos. "We've already been contacted by several qualified candidates including some that have managed at the major league level. Through a very methodical process, we will go about selecting the most qualified candidate. We've formed a selection committee who will help us in our search that will include former Major League player and community supporter Greg Litton, team owners Quint and Rishy Studer, Pensacola native and current Pelicans senior sales executive Talmadge Nunnari, current UWF head baseball coach Mike Jeffcoat and myself."

The signing of the players continues by Stavrenos and Pelicans Director of Player Procurement James Gamble as the begin their third season together. The tandem has put together a team of professionals that has produced a league MVP, several All-Stars and two trips to the post season over the past two years.

The announcement of the field manager will be made after a qualified candidate has been identified by the search committee. The selected skipper will first join with his team on Saturday, April 29 when the Pelicans start spring training in preparation for the Pelicans 2006 Home Opener on Thursday, May 11 versus the Lincoln Saltdogs.

The Inside Scoop: * The Pelicans will be attending the Double Bridge Run this Saturday with Scoop cheering on the runners at the finish line. * Scoop's Reading Challenge sponsored by Appleby's now has nearly 8,000 students signed up from the two county area to take part. * The Pelicans still have a few internship positions available.
