Brooklyn Cyclones News Release

The Brooklyn Cyclones (10-7) lost a close one to the Staten Island Yankees on Thursday night, by the score of 4-3 in 11 innings. With the loss, Brooklyn drops 1.5 games behind the Yankees in the McNamara Division standings.

The Cyclones bats broke out of their offensive slump, at least for an inning, when they scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to break the scoreless tie. Jon Malo started the rally with a lead off single, and Caleb Stewart followed with a single of his own to put two men aboard for the heart of the order. Josh Petersen took advantage by smashing a double into the right-centerfield gap, to chase both runners home and put Brooklyn in front 2-0. The Cyclones added to their lead in the seventh, when a fielding error by Staten Island's shortstop Eduardo Nunez allowed Armand Gaerlan to score from third, and put the Cyclones up 3-0.

The lead would evaporate quickly though, because in the top of the eighth the Yankees scored three times, with the big blow coming on a two-out single to right field that would knot the score at 3-3. In the bottom of the ninth, the Cyclones threatened with a two out rally. Kyle Brown doubled and Malo walked to start the ninth inning trouble, but Jonel Pacheco grounded out to third to end the threat. In the tenth, the Cyclones threatened once again, getting a runner to third with only one out, but again failed to score. The inability to take advantage of these opportunities would prove costly, because in the eleventh the Yankees would score a single run to take the lead for good, 4-3.

Orlando Rengel made the start for the Cyclones and tossed six solid innings of shutout ball. He allowed only four hits, while walking two and striking out four, but received a no decision for the fourth time this season. Eric Brown (0-1) suffered the loss for the Cyclones, allowing one run in his three innings of work.

The Cyclones head to Staten Island tomorrow, looking to salvage the series finale before heading to Hudson Valley for a three game set. The 'Clones return to KeySpan Park on Wednesday, July 13th, to square off with the Williamsport Crosscutters. The game will be broadcast on WFAN-660 AM beginning at 7:00pm. In addition, the first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive Joe and Sid Bobbleheads courtesy of WFAN, Starter and the Brooklyn Cyclones. Great seats are still available, and can be purchased at the KeySpan Park box office, on-line at www.brooklyncyclones.com, or by calling 718-507-TIXX.
