Rochester Knighthawks get defensive, re-sign Zaph and Penny

(Rochester, NY)... Rochester Knighthawks General Manager Jody Gage announced today that the team has re-signed defensemen Casey Zaph and Steve Penny to two-year deals. The contracts are still pending league approval.

Zaph is entering his eighth season of professional lacrosse. He has recorded 60 points (24+36) in 66 games. During the 2003-04 season, the Regina, Saskatchewan, native played in 10 games and registered eight points (3+5) and 37 penalty minutes. In addition, he was named to the Knighthawks' 10th Anniversary Team. He ranks second on the franchise's all-time penalty minute list (242) and holds the single-season franchise record for penalty minutes with 59 -- set in 2002-03. He was originally the Buffalo Bandits' first-round selection (seventh overall) in the 1998 NLL Entry Draft.

Penny begins his fourth season in the National Lacrosse League. Over three seasons, he has notched 23 points (7+16) in 43 games. Last season, he played in 15 of the team's 16 games. Penny was the Knighthawks' first-round selection (10th overall) in the 2002 NLL Dispersal Draft.

The ‘Hawks practice tonight at Sportsplex at 90 Ridge Road in North Tonawanda. The practice is slated for 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. The session is free and open to the public. Players and coaches will be available for autographs following the workout.

The Knighthawks open their 11th season of professional lacrosse against the Minnesota Swarm. Rochester plays its NLL home and season opener on Saturday, January 1st at 7:35 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena at the Rochester War Memorial.
