Towson, Md. - Midfielder Conor Denihan scored the game-winning goal with 6:44 left in overtime as the Long Island Lizards (5-4) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 17-16 overtime victory over the Baltimore Bayhawks (5-4) in a Major League Lacrosse game at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium at Towson University on Saturday evening.
With the overtime victory, the Lizards were able to salvage a split of the weekend series with their National Division rivals, while handing the Bayhawks their fourth straight loss at home. Baltimore has not won a home game since August 9, 2003 in a 19-14 decision over Rochester at Homewood Field.
Baltimore jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 9:36 left in the first quarter as attackman Dan Marohl scored off a feed from midfielder Brian Langtry. Long Island quickly countered with back-to-back goals from Denihan and rookie attackman Anthony Gilardi, taking a 2-1 lead with 2:23 remaining in the opening stanza. Langtry and midfielder Mark Frye gave the Bayhawks a 3-2 lead with two straight goals before Lizard attackman Tim Goettelmann scored his 100th career goal with one second remaining in the period, tying the game at 3-3. Goettelmann became the ninth player in MLL history to reach 100 career goals.
The goal by Goettelmann started a 3-0 Long Island run, which featured goals from rookie Corey Harned and attackman Ken Garcia. Down by 5-3, the Bayhawks tied the game at 5-5 with back-to-back goals from Frye and attackman Tom Marechek with 8:00 to go in the stanza. Reigning Bud Light MLL Most Valuable Player Jay Jalbert scored 20 seconds later to reclaim the one-goal cushion for the Lizards at 6-5. The two teams traded goals before Marohl scored his second goal of the game with just under two minutes left in the first half, tying the game at 7-7 at the intermission.
Garcia started the third quarter scoring with a power-play goal with 12:59 left in the frame before the Bayhawks rallied with a 4-0 run, turning the one-point deficit into a three-point lead at 11-8 with 10:48 left in the third quarter. Jalbert scored with 4:49 remaining in the period to stop Baltimore's momentum and midfielder A.J. Haugen quickly followed with a power-play goal off a Jalbert feed to cut the deficit to 11-10 with 15 minutes remaining in regulation.
After a Gary Gait goal with 14:27 left in the fourth quarter, Long Island went on a 4-0 run to take a 14-12 lead with 10:06 left in regulation. The spurt featured three power-play goals as the Bayhawks were called for five penalties, including a game misconduct and ejection of defenseman Brian Reese. Reese was ejected for the second time in two seasons after receiving a three-minute game misconduct penalty.
Baltimore used the penalties as motivation, scoring four straight goals of its own and retaking the lead at 16-14 with 1:41 left in regulation. The lead was short-lived as Haugen came to the rescue, scoring a two-point goal with 15 seconds left at 16-16. It was Haugen's first two-point goal of the season.
In the overtime period, Long Island had the first possession, missing two shots, including a shot by Haugen which was saved by Baltimore goalkeeper Rob Scherr. After Baltimore took a shot on offense, the Lizards reclaimed possession and had a shot by Goettelmann saved by Scherr. Baltimore's second opportunity to win the game failed as Gait and Frye had shots stopped by goalkeeper Brian Dougherty. Long Island converted the clear and with 6:44 left in overtime, Denihan scored past Scherr to give the Lizards the exciting victory.
Denihan scored three goals, including the game-winner, while Garcia led all scorers with four goals. Frye led the Bayhawk offense by scoring three goals, including the two-pointer. Gait and Millon had their streaks of consecutive games with a goal extended to 25 and 21, respectively. Scherr made 18 saves in a losing effort for Baltimore.
The Bayhawks return to action next Saturday night, hosting the Philadelphia Barrage (4-5) and former goalkeeper Greg Cattrano at Unitas Stadium with opening face-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Long Island will host Rochester on Friday night at Mitchel Field.
