
Millon Leads Bayhawks to Win Over Defending MLL Champs, 15-13

Uniondale, N.Y. â Attackman Mark Millon scored a game-high four goals with four assists to lead the Baltimore Bayhawks (5-3) to a 15-13 come-from-behind win over the defending Major League Lacrosse champion Long Island Lizards (4-4) at a soggy Mitchel Field on Friday evening.
With the win, the Bayhawks register their first win at Long Island since the 2001 season. In addition, the Bayhawks improve to 5-0 away from Johnny Unitas ® Stadium this season. The Bayhawks are 0-3 at home so far in 2004.
Millon gave the Bayhawks a 1-0 lead just 23 seconds into the first quarter on a feed from attackman Tom Marechek. Rookie Corey Harned tied the game at the 8:27 mark of the opening stanza off an assist from Tim Goettelmann. After the teams exchanged goals, the Lizards took a 3-2 advantage on a goal from Ken Garcia. John Gagliardi was credited with the assist on the play.
Baltimore reclaimed the one-goal advantage with back-to-back goals from Marechek and midfielder Jeff Sonke to start the second quarter. Goettelmann tied the game at 4-4, scoring off a pass from Kevin Finneran. Dan Marohl and Andrew Wasik traded goals before Sonke and Marechek teamed up for consecutive goals to give Baltimore a 7-5 lead at the end of the first half.
Goettelmann and Jay Jalbert tied the game for the Lizards with a pair of goals in the opening 1:19 of the third period before Sonke scored his third goal of the game with 12:28 remaining in the period. Long Island claimed a 9-8 cushion with 10:12 left in the third stanza on goals from attackmen Ken Garcia and Chris Massey. The Bayhawks went up by 10-9 on goals from Millon and midfielder Gary Gait before Long Island took an 11-10 advantage at the end of the third period on goals from midfielders Jarred Testa and Kevin Finneran.
After Finneran gave the host Lizards a 12-10 lead with 13:32 left in regulation, the Bayhawks rallied for a 5-1 spurt to take the win from their rivals. Marechek and Millon tied the game with a pair of goals, assisting on each other's goal. Conor Denihan gave Long Island its final advantage at 13-12 with a goal past starting goalkeeper Rob Scherr with 8:59 remaining. Millon and Marohl scored goals to give the Bayhawks a 14-13 lead before Baltimore scored an insurance goal off a Long Island miscue with 1:53 left. After Long Island netminder Brian Dougherty made a save on a Gait shot, he attempted to clear the ball, but the ball fell out of the stick and into the goal to give Baltimore the two-goal win.
Millon was named the Bud Light Game MVP after scoring the four goals and tying a team record with four assists. Scherr improved to 2-1 on the season by making 20 saves, while Dougherty stopped 24 shots. Midfielder Paul Cantabene returned to his winning ways at the face-off "X" by taking 22 of 32 draws against the league's career leader Chris Cercy.
