Lake Elsinore Storm News Release

The Lake Elsinore Storm announced today that former major leaguer and 216-game winner Charlie Hough will join the club as pitching coach. Hough joined the team Wednesday afternoon and will be in uniform Wednesday night when the Storm host the Inland Empire 66ers at 7:05 pm.

The move comes after the San Diego Padres announced Saturday that Mobile Bay Bears' pitching coach Darren Balsley would join the major league field staff as pitching coach. Balsley was the Storm's pitching coach for the 2001 season. Current Storm pitching coach Gary Lance, who began the 2003 season with the team, moves to Class-AA Mobile to replace Balsley.

Hough spent 25 years in the major leagues with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox and Florida Marlins. He appeared in 858 games over the course of his major league career – 440 starts – and recorded 216 wins, 2632 strikeouts and posted a career ERA of 3.74. The right-hander also tossed 107 complete games during his career and recorded 61 saves. He is the only pitcher in major league history to have made 400 starts and 400 relief appearances in his career.

Hough led Texas in wins and innings pitched each year from 1982 to 1988 and led the team in ERA in five of those seven years. The knuckleballer currently ranks as the Rangers' all-time leader in wins, innings, strikeouts and complete games, and ranks third in games and sixth in ERA. In 1993, Hough became the first-ever pitcher for the Florida Marlins when he started Opening Day for the club in its inaugural season.

Hough served as pitching coach for the New York Mets from 2001-02, and before that served in the same capacity for the Dodgers in both 1998 and 1999. The Los Angeles, CA resident was also the pitching coach for the California League's San Bernardino Stampede (now the Inland Empire 66ers) from 1996-98.

The Storm won the California League's Southern Division Championship last season, their second division title in as many years as a San Diego Padres affiliate. Individual game and group tickets for the 2003 regular season are now available by contacting the Storm box office at (909) 245-4487.
