Lancaster JetHawks News Release

Lancaster, Ca. – The hitting was just as good as the pitching for the JetHawks in a 12-2 win against Visalia at the Hangar. Justin Wechsler pitched six strong innings, and the offense pounded out 17 hits, in winning their fourth straight home game. Lancaster (24-19) remains ½ game out of first place, as Lake Elsinore defeated Inland Empire 2-1. Visalia (18-25) sinks to seven games under .500 in losing their second straight.

Wechsler (4-2) picked up his third win as a starter, in his longest outing of the season. The Ball St. product allowed just four hits and one earned run, while striking out a season high seven batters. He retired the first eight batters faced, and 12 of 13 through the first four innings.

Offensively, every starter had at least one hit. Dan Uggla secured his first four-hit night of the season with singles in the first, second, third, and fifth innings. Chris Snyder added three hits, and Jaime Jones added his sixth home run, on a 2-for-4 night. Jones had four RBI's, and all six of his home runs have come against the North Division.

The JetHawks put the game out of reach with a six-run first inning. Marland Williams, Uggla, Josh Kroeger, and Sergio Santos put together four hits to lead off the inning, scoring two runs. Later, Chris Snyder added an RBI single, Jones a run-scoring double, and Mayo Santana another RBI single. Williams, batting for the second time, struck out to finally end the inning. It was the fourth time the JetHawks had scored six runs in an inning this season.

All six of those runs – and two more in the second – were charged to starter Jeff Francis (2-6). The lefty allowed 10 hits, in addition to those eight runs – all of which were earned – in suffering his league leading sixth loss of the season.

The only offense by the Oaks came on a two out double by Melvin Rosario in the fifth, and Jeff Winchester's solo homer in the seventh. Rosario was the lone bright spot for Visalia, ending the night 4-for-4 with an RBI. It was the sixth straight game the Oaks had scored three runs or fewer.

John Castellanos, Cliff McMachen, and Corby Medlin each worked an inning of relief. Castellanos was the only of the three to allow a run, giving up Winchester's homer in the 7th.

Lefty Doug Slaten (3-2, 5.10) will pitch the second game of the three game series that starts at 7:15 p.m.. Zach Parker (2-2, 3.54) will pitch for the Oaks.

The next major giveaway at the Hangar features packs of trading cards, courtesy of Upper Deck to be distributed to the first 1,000 fans on Friday, May 30. On Saturday, May 31st, the first 1,500 fans receive a JetHawks cap, courtesy of Desert Christian Schools. The First 1,500 seniors 55 and older will be granted free admission on Senior Day, Saturday June 1st, sponsored by Lancaster West Rotary.
