Beat Forward Maribel Dominguez Named WUSA Player of the MonthMay 1, 2003 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) - Atlanta Beat
Three games into the WUSA season, Dominguez is lighting up the scoreboard for Atlanta. In the Beat's 5-0 win over the New York Power, she scored a goal and tallied an assist. Dominguez followed that performance up by tying the WUSA single game scoring record, with three goals and an assist for seven points in the Beat's 6-0 win over the Boston Breakers. The hat trick was the first of the 2003 season and was only the sixth in league history.
"We are happy for Maribel to be honored with this award," said Beat Head Coach Tom Stone. "We are seeing a player that was very eager to prove herself in this league and right now she's making the most of her opportunity. A true measure of how valuable she is, is that she's making everyone around her better."
Following her record setting performance, Dominguez and the Beat headed to Washington for a battle of undefeated teams. Dominguez did not disappoint, as she drew a penalty kick in the first half with an excellent display of skill and then scored the Beat's only goal of the game in the 1-1 tie. Dominguez, a Mexico City native and captain of the Mexican Women's National Team, leads the league in goals (5), points (12) and is tied for 2nd in assists (2).
Dominguez, who captured 55 points in the voting, outdistanced Washington's Siri Mullinix (14 pts.), Boston's Maren Meinert (13 pts.), San Diego's Shannon MacMillan (4 pts.) and Washington's Jacqui Little (1 pt.). The WUSA's Player of the Month is selected at the end every month throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.
The Beat's next match is Saturday, May 3, at 7 p.m. versus the San Jose CyberRays at Herndon Stadium in downtown Atlanta. The CyberRays are 1-2-0, with a win over the Philadelphia Charge and losses to the Washington Freedom and San Diego Spirit.
