San Diego Spirit Game Plan vs. Boston
May 1, 2003 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA)
San Diego Spirit News Release
San Diego plays Boston for the second time this season and will try to avenge a 2-1 opening day loss at Torero Stadium. The Spirit, who are on a two-game winning streak, will get a double-bonus of not having to play on the plastic grass of Nickerson Field while at the same time getting to play at the beautiful, new Gillette Field in Foxboro, Mass., in a doubleheader with the New England Revolution of MLS. Boston is riding a 12-game home-unbeaten streak. After moving over .500 last week with the 2-1 win over San Jose, this match looms large as the Spirit look to lodge themselves into the top four early in the season. It won't be easy. Boston is one of the hottest teams in the league, and outside of a 6-0 demolition at the feet of the Atlanta Beat, which is looking more like an aberration every game the Breakers play, Boston has been one of the best teams in the league. The attacking combination of Kristine Lilly, Maren Meinert and Dagny Mellgren is practically unstoppable, which will give Joy Fawcett and the defense a monster challenge, while the Spirit will have to count on goals from the in-form Julie Fleeting and Shannon MacMillan in a game that might well turn into a shoot-out. The game also marks the return of Allie (Kemp) Sullivan to Boston where she played two seasons with the Breakers. She played in 32 games, compiling two goals and one assist. In another homecoming of sorts, defender Kim Pickup who played with Boston Renegades in 2000 of the W-League returns to Bean town.
