Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE - Trent Jewett, who ranks fourth in Nashville Sounds history with 176 managerial victories after piloting the club from 1998-2000, will return to Music City in 2003 after being named the club's manager for the upcoming season. Pittsburgh Pirates Senior Vice President and General Manager Dave Littlefield made the announcement this morning.
Joining Jewett on the Sounds' 2003 coaching staff will be returning pitching coach Darold Knowles and first-year hitting coach Jay Loviglio.
Jewett, 38, has compiled a 553-568 record (.493) in eight-plus seasons as a minor league manager. He begins his second term as Nashville skipper and replaces Marty Brown, who has left the Pirates organization after leading the Sounds to a 136-148 record over the past two seasons. Brown has yet to accept a position with another organization.
Jewett, who enters his sixth season as a Triple-A manager and 12th year overall as an instructor in the Bucs organization, logged a 176-164 record during his 2 1/2 seasons at the Sounds' helm from 1998-2000, trailing only Rick Renick (383), Pete Mackanin (186), and Stump Merrill (178) among the 19 managers in the team's 25-year history.
"This is something I look forward to," Jewett said of his return to Nashville. "My wife and I enjoyed our time in Nashville during my first stint and it's nice to know that I'll be returning to a good area with good fans. I enjoyed my experience coaching in the big leagues but at the same time I missed managing, and I look forward to this opportunity with the Sounds.
He was the Sounds' initial manager when the team became a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate in 1998 and guided the club until he was promoted to the Bucs' staff as third-base coach on June 6, 2000. He spent the remainder of the 2000 season and each of the past two years serving the Pirates in that capacity before being reassigned to his current role this off-season.
Among his managerial highlights, Jewett became Calgary's most successful first-year manager in 1996 after leading the Cannons to a 74-68 record, the 2nd-highest win total in franchise history, and piloted the 1995 Carolina Mudcats to the Southern League championship and the best overall record (89-55) in the circuit. He also guided Mesa to a 29-22 record and a division championship in the 1996 Arizona Fall League.
During his playing career, he spent four seasons as a catcher in the Pirates ' farm system, compiling a .172 batting average (55-for-319) with two home runs and 26 RBI in 113 games from 1987-90 before beginning his coaching career as manager of rookie-level Welland in 1992.
Jewett, who graduated from North Texas State University with a degree in business management, resides in Coppell, Texas, with his wife Susan.
Knowles, whose 2002 Sounds pitching staff led the Pacific Coast League with a franchise-record 1,080 strikeouts and issued the fewest walks in the club' s 25-year history (a league-low 356) while posting the circuit's 3rd-best ERA (4.00), enters his third year tutoring Nashville hurlers and 23rd season overall as a minor-league pitching instructor.
Loviglio, who replaces Curtis Wilkerson as the Sounds' hitting instructor, enters his seventh year as an instructor in the Bucs organization. He served as hitting coach for Double-A Altoona last season. The three-time minor-league All-Star has previously served the Pirates' minor-league system as baserunning instructor (1994-95), outfield instructor (2001), and twice as manager (Single-A Augusta in 1996 & Single-A Hickory in 2000).
The Nashville Sounds kick off their 26th season on Thursday, April 3, 2003, when they host the Iowa Cubs at Greer Stadium. Season ticket and mini-plan packages are currently on sale. Contact the Sounds box office at 242-4371 or visit the team's website at www.nashvillesounds.com to order or for further details. Individual game tickets will be available for purchase on March 1st.
