Zbydniewski, Barre and Canty win week 15 awards

July 12, 2005 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - South Georgia quarterback BRIAN ZBYDNIEWSKI, Oklahoma City wide receiver/defensive back B.J. BARRE and Tulsa wide receiver/defensive back CHRIS CANTY have been named the Offensive Player, U.S. Army Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 15 of the 2005 season.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Zbydniewski (6-1, 180, Belhaven), in his rookie season, earned his first career victory as a starting quarterback, leading the Wildcats to a 58-57 win on the road against the Albany Conquest. Zbydniewski completed 21-of-37 passes for 241 yards and seven touchdowns. He also rushed for one touchdown. His last touchdown was his most important. At Albany's 19-yardline and down six points, Zbydniewski rolled out and found Adrian Cockfield for a touchdown with only 12 seconds left in the contest. The extra point gave the Wildcats the lead and the win. South Georgia entered the fourth quarter down 16 points but after Zbydniewski rushed for a touchdown, threw a touchdown pass and converted both two-point conversions the game was tied. After Albany scored and missed the extra point, all Zbydniewski had to do was find Cockfield in the endzone with 12 seconds left to give the Wildcats the game. This is Zbydniewski first weekly award and he is the first Wildcats player to win a weekly award this season.

U.S. ARMY IRONMAN OF THE WEEK

Barre (6-2, 210, Ohio State), in his second season, helped the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz defeat the Amarillo Dusters 77-52 on Sunday afternoon. It was only the second loss for Amarillo at home this season. Oklahoma City now has an identical 8-5 record as Amarillo, but holds the tiebreaker over them after defeating the Dusters twice this season. Barre caught six passes for 103 yards and three touchdowns. Barre's first touchdown put the Yard Dawgz up 14-13, a lead Oklahoma City would never relinquish. Barre's touchdowns were receptions of 30, 26 and nine yards. He also rushed three times for 14 yards. On defense he recorded the only interception of the contest. He intercepted a Julian Reese pass in the endzone as the first half ended. This is the second time in Barre's career he has been honored by the league. Last season as a member of the Tulsa Talons he won the U.S. Army Ironman of the Week Award in Week 4.

ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Canty (5-10, 190, Kansas State), in his rookie season, earned ADT Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance against the Memphis Xplorers that helped the Talons stay in the West Division title hunt. Canty recorded 3.5 tackles (3 solo) including one tackle for a loss. He also forced and recovered a fumble in the second quarter. The former Wildcat also totaled eight passes defended. Canty played in the NFL with the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks and New Orleans Saints. This is the first af2 honor for Canty.
