MARION, Ill. - Former Miners left-handed pitcher Clay Zavada has been added to the Arizona Diamondbacks 40-man roster. He will be invited to the Diamondbacks major league spring training camp but is expected to begin the season with the Double-A Mobile BayBears. He is the first former Miner to be added to a major league team's 40-man roster.

Zavada is one of seven Miners to join a major league organization in the team's two-year history. Last month Baseball America named the former Southeast Missouri State pitcher the top independent league prospect who signed with an affiliated club in 2008.

"Our coaching staff and front office could not be happier for Clay," Miners Manager Mike Pinto said. "He did an exceptional job here and went on to do even better with the Diamondbacks this summer. He works very hard, has great talent and a great attitude in how he goes about his work every day. We hope Clay to be the first of many from our organization to continue their career upwards."

Zavada began the 2008 season with the Miners where he posted a 2-1 record with a 1.72 ERA and four saves in 12 relief appearances. The Diamondbacks purchased his rights from the Miners on June 18 in what was essentially a trade that sent first baseman Brad Miller to Southern Illinois. From there, Zavada went 3-1 with a 0.51 ERA and eight saves in 24 appearances with the South Bend Silver Hawks, the Diamondbacks Single-A affiliate.

Fans will have their first chance to purchase tickets for the 2009 season when the Miners Holiday 10 Packs go on sale on Friday, Nov. 28, the day after Thanksgiving, at the Rent One Park General Store and on the Miners website.
