Philadelphia Colonials News Release
PHILADELPHIA â Philadelphia's American Basketball Association (ABA) team will now be known as the "Philadelphia Fusion" thanks to a contest submission by 9-year-old Cody Zeuner of Mantua, N.J., General Manager Jeff Wilson announced today.
"I'm so excited that my name was chosen," said Cody. "To me, âfusion' means combining lots of good players into one big team that can win the championship."
The "Your Team, Your Name" contest asked children ages 14 and younger to submit their favorite mascot name to replace the original "Squires" moniker. The front office staff then chose the winning name and will award Cody with a $500 U.S. savings bond and a family four-pack of season tickets to Fusion home games.
"We felt it was important to have children involved in building this team," said Wilson. "I would like to congratulate Cody and thank everyone who submitted mascot names. Choosing a winner was a challenge, but we really enjoyed the process. By selecting our name, we can now launch our identity as an affordable entertainment alternative for the Philadelphia community."
Every child who entered the contest will be awarded with a Fusion Fun Pack just in time for the inaugural home game in November.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
