Tampa Yankees News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - An early five-run deficit did not faze the Tampa Yankees (17-15). 13 hits produced 13 runs as the T-Yanks battled back to win 13-6, completing a four-game sweep of the St. Lucie Mets (17-13) on Wednesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The Yankees have now won five straight games.
St. Lucie tagged RHP Brady Lail for five runs in the first inning. The first four batters of the game reached base, including an RBI single by Jared King. One out later, Aderlin Rodriguez drove in a run with a ground out. Gavin Cecchini then delivered a three-run bomb over the wall in left.
RHP Michael Fulmer seemed unhittable for the Mets, retiring the first eight batters in order. The bats woke up for Tampa in the fourth as the Yankees rallied for seven runs.
Tampa loaded the bases with nobody out. A wild pitch scored Greg Bird before Aaron Judge reloaded the bags with a walk. Angelo Gumbs sent an RBI single to left and Trent Garrison followed with a two-RBI hit to right. Jose Rosario kept the train going with a bloop single to left-center. One out later, a walk by Cito Culver loaded the bases and Greg Bird delivered an RBI sacrifice fly. Dante BichetteJr added a run-scoring single, giving the Yankees a 7-5 lead.
Fulmer (4-9) allowed seven runs (four earned) on five hits in three and a third innings, walking two while striking out six.
The Yankees kept the bats hot against reliever Jake Kuebler in the fifth. Gumbs and Garrison each reached and Rosario singled on a bunt down the third base line. Kuebler made a wild throw to first, allowing Gumbs to score. A single by Danny Oh cashed in Garrison. With Bird at the plate, a passed ball scored Rosario from third. Bird walked and Bichette singled, reloading the bases. St. Lucie's Gilbert Gomez dropped a sac-fly by Eric Jagielo in center field, allowing two more runs to score, giving Tampa a 12-5 advantage.
Lail (1-0) pitched five scoreless frames after the rocky first inning. The righty allowed five runs on six hits in six innings, walking two with no strikeouts in his first win of the season with Tampa.
Back-to-back doubles by Gumbs and Garrison plated the final run for the Yankees in the eighth. St. Lucie pushed across a run with an RBI ground out by Cam Maron in the ninth.
Rosario went 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, extending his hit streak to 12 games. Gumbs scored three times, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Garrison drove in three runs, going 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Up next, the T-Yanks stay home to begin a four-game series with the Fort Myers Miracle. Southpaw Caleb Smith (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will take the hill for Tampa. The Miracle start is TBA.
