Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners have signed former Yankees left-handed pitching prospect Tim Dennehy.
Dennehy, 22, is expected to join the Miners starting rotation this season. He was taken by New York in the 26th round of the 2006 draft and in two seasons with the Yankees organization went 7-2 with a 3.70 ERA in 56.0 innings. He made 26 appearances, four of them starts. Last season with the Staten Island Yankees of the New York-Penn League, he was a teammate of David Phelps, brother of Miners closer Mike Phelps.
In January Miners Manager Mike Pinto and Coach Ron Biga saw Dennehy at a showcase Pinto runs for professional pitchers. The Miners also signed former Astros prospect and left-handed pitcher Cory Lapinski after seeing him at the showcase.
"Tim showed a very firm 90-plus fastball in our January showcase," Miners Manager Mike Pinto said. "We really liked his stuff, his approach and his attitude. Follow-up research gave us very good reports from the Yankees, and we were fortunate to convince him to continue his career with the Miners in an effort to get back to a major league organization."
In 2007 Dennehy played his only season at Chandler-Gilbert (Ariz.) Community College. He posted a 1.48 ERA, striking out 79 in 85 innings. The University of Tennessee offered him a scholarship, but he signed with the Yankees instead. Dennehy was also drafted by the Indians in 2005.
The Miners will begin the 2009 season in Evansville on Friday, May 22. The home opener is scheduled for Friday, May 29 at 7:05 p.m. For a complete schedule visit www.southernillinoisminers.com.
