Pittsfield Suns News Release
The Pittsfield Suns (5-0) squeaked by in a nailbiter, stopping the Bristol Blues (0-4) rally in the 8th and 9th short thanks to closer Craig Lacey to etch their 5th straight win 4-3.
The Suns were on the board first and kept the lead throughout, starting with the third inning. When the bases were loaded, Justin Cooke grounded to shortstop, who only had one play: to throw to first. Cooke was credited with an RBI on the groundout. Alexander White, the next batter, crushed a double into deep center field to plate 2 runners. Also, in the fourth, Conor Moriarty hit an RBI single into left field to make it 4-0.
But as the Suns' runs concluded there, The Blues' were about to pick up. In the fifth, Logan Green lined an RBI double down the left field line, Brandon Grover has the first home run at Wahconah Park this season with a blast into straightaway right, and Ben Maycock ripped a double into left field. Greg Cavaliere had trouble collecting the ball, allowing Chris Davis to score on the fielding error. In the eighth with the runners on the corners and the tying run on third, Craig Lacey came out for the four-out save situation. He was able to get Josh Zbierski to ground into a fielder's choice to end the threat in the eighth. But in the ninth, after loading the bases with only one out, Lacey made Jake Frasca pop out into an infield fly rule to first base, and got Ben Maycock to ground out to first as well, giving the Suns their fifth straight victory to start the season.
Bob Hamel (1-0) got the win with a quality start, pitching six innings full with one earned run, four hits, and five strikeouts. David Stiehl (0-1) was given the loss after going only three innings giving up three earned runs. Jordan Muchin got the hold as Craig Lacey took his third save of the season.
The Elser Animal Control Pest Player of the Game went to Conor Moriarty, who went 3-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.
The Pittsfield Suns continue the longest homestand of the season in a rematch against the Bristol Blues tomorrow, June 8th. Tomorrow, Nathan Florance will toe the rubber for the Suns opposite Blues hurler, Michael Genaro. It will be Throwback Thursday, 60's edition, so get ready to return to the age of Disco (no, there will not be any destruction of disco paraphernalia). Gates open at 6 PM with the ball game slated for 7 PM. Pre game is set for 6:45 PM.
