
X's Re-Sign Walter Young

SIOUX CITY, IA - The Sioux City Explorers announced today that they have re-signed veteran first baseman/DH Walter Young for the 2009 American Association season. Young is the first off-season signing for manager Les Lancaster's 2009 squad and will serve as one of the team's four veterans.
"Walter had a huge impact in our second half championship run and it is a great feeling to know that we will have him from the start of the season," comments manager Les Lancaster. "It will be nice to have Walter's big bat in the middle of the order and we will now build around him as we continue to comprise the 2009 roster."
Young joined the X's on July 26th via a trade with the Sussex Sky Hawks of the Can-Am League and had an immediate impact, as he totaled (15) RBI's in his first four games with the X's, which includes a (7) RBI performance in his second game as a member of the X's. In only (26) games, Young hit .367 for the X's while collecting (26) hits, (4) doubles, (5) home runs and drove in (29) RBI's while compiling a (.561) slugging percentage to go along with an on-base percentage of .443.
The 2009 season will mark Young's 11th season in professional baseball and first full season with the X's. Young reached the Major League Level with the Baltimore Orioles during the 2005 campaign. In (14) games with the Orioles, Young hit .303 with (10) hits, (1) home run, and (3) RBI's. For his career, Walter has accumulated (1039) hits, (177) doubles, (163) homeruns and (694) RBI's.
The 27 year-old Hattiesburg, Mississippi native began his professional career in 1999, when the Pittsburgh Pirates selected him in the 31st round of the Major League draft. After playing for (5) seasons in the Pirates organization, Young played in the Baltimore Oriole's and Houston Astro's organizations before starting his Independent career in 2007 with the Winnipeg Goldeye's of the Northern League.
