Memphis Xplorers News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss â The Xplorers suffered a tough setback with a 39-37 loss in Tulsa to the unbeaten Talons. Kevin Prentiss had a spectacular game with 13 receptions and 199 yards receiving, but Memphis came up short and dropped to 1-2. WHAT A GAME
· Kevin Prentiss was spectacular in the Xplorers 39-37 loss at Tulsa. Prentiss had 13 catches for 199 yards and three TDs. Prentiss currently is tied for second in af2 with 48 points, tied for third with 8.0 receptions per game, and fourth with 110 yards receiving per contest. His 13 receptions against Tulsa is tied for the 2003 af2 single game high, and the 199 yards receiving is the second best total in a single game this season.
HERE COMES THE PRESSURE
· Xplorers defensive lineman Anthony Bonner currently ranks second in af2 with 3.0 sacks.
STICKY FINGERS
· Xplorers defensive specialist Kevin Cobb has three interceptions in three games this season. Cobb is currently tied for second in af2 in picks and his 13.5 tackles rank among the league leaders as well.
GET THAT OUT OF HERE
· Xplorers defensive specialist Keith Spann currently is tied for second in af2 with nine passes defended.
PRACTICE TIMES
· The Xplorers will practice Tuesday â Thursday at 8 p.m. in the southeast corner of the DCC parking lot.
TULSA 39 - MEMPHIS 37 - 4/19/03 - SATURDAY
The Xplorers came up just short in a first place showdown with the Tulsa Talons by the score of 39-37 at the Tulsa Convention Center. Kevin Prentiss had a marvelous game with 200 plus yards receiving and three TD catches. The Memphis Xplorers return home and take on the Florida Firecats this coming Saturday, April 26th, at the DeSoto Civic Center, located just 15 minutes south of downtown Memphis. FIRST HALF
The Xplorers took the opening kickoff and went 30 yards in eight plays, capped off by a one yard TD run by Jesse Allen for a 6-0 lead. The Talons answered right away as Tacoma Fontaine took the ensuing kickoff and went 55 yards to the endzone. With the PAT the Talons took a 7-6 lead. Trapped on their own one yard line to start their next possession the Xplorers were dropped for a safety and Tulsa grabbed a 9-6 advantage. The Talons took the free kick and marched 35 yards on four plays capped by a diving, juggling five yard catch by Mitch Allner from Craig Strickland to make it 16-6 with the PAT. In the second quarter the Xplorers got back in the game when Rod Robinson capped a 10 play, 26 yard drive with a five yard pass to Adrian Burnette to cut the Tulsa lead to 16-12. Then Kevin Cobb made a great interception in his own endzone to stop a Talons drive. The Xplorers marched 45 yards in six plays capped off by a 14 yard pass to Kevin Prentiss to give Memphis a 19-16 lead with 4:30 minutes to go in the half. The Talons responded with a five play, 49 yard drive that was finished off by a 17 yard catch and run by Timon Marshall to give Tulsa 23-19 lead with the PAT. On the final play of the first half Tommy Dodson connected on a 22 yard field goal to give Tulsa a 26-19 lead.
SECOND HALF
In the second half the Xplorers came out right away and marched 48 yards in two plays finished off by a 40 yard catch and run by Kevin Prentiss, the Xplorers missed a chance to tie the game as the PAT was wide with 9:30 to go in the quarter. The Talons reasserted their advantage as Strickland drove Tulsa 12 yards on three plays with the score coming on a seven yard catch by Fontaine, the PAT made it 33-25. Once again the Xplorers came back. Prentiss had three catches on a four play, 41 yard drive and finished it off with a 10 yard TD catch to make to 33-31, the two point conversion to tie the game came up short on the final play of the third quarter. The Talons came up with their biggest drive of the night when Strickland led Tulsa to a four play, 45 yard drive that he capped off with a five yard pass to Brandon Daniels to make it 39-31 with 12 minutes to play in the game. The Xplorers mustered one last gasp as they drove 46 yards on six plays with Johnny Loper finishing off the drive with an eight yard TD reception. The Xplorers had a two point conversion try to tie the game, but Daniels intercepted the ball and the Talons ran out the last 4:30 on the clock to win the game. FINAL SCORE Tulsa 39, Memphis 37.
