Memphis Xplorers News Release
Fresno, CA-The Memphis Xplorers of the af2 defeated the Central Valley Coyotes 69-57 at the Selland Arena earlier tonight. The win moved Memphis to 12-3 on the season.
The Xplorers were led by quarterback Brian Jones, who earned the Offensive MVP. Jones had two rushing touchdowns, and threw for 300 yards on 18 completions. He also threw for five touchdowns, which gives him 66 on the season, a new franchise record. The previous record was 65, held by former Xplorer Tim Lester.
The ADT Defensive Player of the Game was Khreem Smith for the second consecutive weekend. Smith had three solo tackles, including one for a loss, and a pass deflection. Smith earned ADT Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts last Saturday against Manchester.
Terrell Adams was the Army Ironman of the Game with three different scores. He had two interceptions, one of which he returned for a score. Adams had two carries, including one for a nine yard touchdown. He also added five catches for 55 yards and a touchdown.
Memphis led Central Valley 34-30 at the break, before jumping out to a 62-37 lead in the fourth quarter.
"This was a great win for this team," said Xplorers Head Coach Danton Barto. "A lot of these guys were playing in front of their families and friends, and they played well."
Barto was referring to the six players on the team with California ties, including Jones, Sále Key, Lavell Mann, Phillip Perry, Lewis Powell, and Clyde Sanders.
The Tulsa Talons also won Saturday which keeps the Xplorers one-game lead in the National Conference intact. Central Valley dropped to 7-8 on the season, which severely hurt the playoff hopes.
Memphis' next game is Saturday night against the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings. Game time is scheduled for 7:05pm. Single game tickets start as low as $7 and can be purchased by calling 662-342-1755, visiting the DeSoto Civic Center box office, or by logging onto www.TicketMaster.com today.
