WV Miners Baseball Announce First 2019 Signees

October 22, 2018 - Prospect League (Prospect) - West Virginia Miners News Release

The first player signings for the 2019 West Virginia Miners roster were announce by the team on October 22 with the signings of infielder Carlos Lara and catcher Chaz Bertolani as two players that will call Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley, WV their summer home during the next Prospect League season

For Lara, the spring of 2019 marks his second year of college baseball when he will play his sophomore season at Palm Beach Atlantic University, located in West Palm Beach, FL. The school is an NCAA Division-II institution that is a member of the Sunshine State Conference. His freshman season in 2018 for the Sailfish that saw the 6'0" 180-pounder play in 32 games (12 starts) and hit .182 (10-for-55) with a homer and nine runs scored. His first collegiate start on March 23, 2018 was especially memorable as he went 3-5 with a homer and two RBI versus Nova Southeastern University.

Prior to arriving at Palm Beach Atlantic, he had a fine high school career at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in his hometown of Miami, FL.

The summer of 2019 will see Bertolani be the third different catcher for the Miners in three straight seasons from Lipscomb University (2017-Jeffrey Crisan, 2018-Chris Bashlor), a member of the NCAA D-I ASUN Conference.

The 5'8" 155 pound Bertolani was an early signee for Lipscomb, inking his letter of intent with the Bisons on November 9, 2017 while still a high school senior at Johns Creek High School in his hometown of Alpharetta, GA. He played all four years at Johns Creek and saw duty also as a middle infielder for the Gladiators when not seeing action behind the plate. He was a nationally ranked player during his high school years, being named in multiple seasons as a Rawlings All-American for high school level players.

At the time of his college signing, the following statement was offered by the Lipscomb baseball coaching staff:

"Chaz is a catcher and second baseman that does a lot of things well. He can run a little bit and can certainly catch. He has caught some of the best arms not only in the state (Georgia) but also in the country with his summer club. He is a guy that we recognized early on as one who fits our scheme perfectly."
