Tulsa Drillers News Release
The Wichita Wranglers scored eight runs over the first four innings and never trailed in beating the Tulsa Drillers 10-8 Thursday night at Drillers Stadium. The loss snapped a season-high five-game winning streak for the Drillers.
The Wranglers jumped on Drillers starter Keith Ramsey with four runs in the top of the first inning on Thursday. The big blow was a 3-run home run from Cory Aldridge, one of three hits on the night by the right fielder.
The Drillers answered with a run in the bottom of the first as Tony Miller led off with a triple and later scored on a base-hit from Ryan Spilborghs. But, the Wranglers extended their lead to 8-1 with a run in the second, two more in the third and another run in the fourth.
The Drillers cut the deficit to 8-6 with a five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sean Barker reached on an error to begin the inning and scored on a double by Jayson Nix. Alvin Colina followed with another double to score Nix, and Aaron McNeal walked. After Gustavo Escobar grounded out, Doug Bernier hit his first home run of the season to quickly put Tulsa back in the game.
The score remained 8-6 until the sixth inning when Wichita scored two more runs on a single by Shane Costa.
Tulsa added a run in the eighth and then threatened to send the game into extra innings in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Barker walked but was forced out at second on a groundball from Nix. But when Colina was hit by a pitch, the Drillers had the tying run at the plate in Aaron McNeal. The first baseman just missed a 3-run homer, hitting a drive off the wall in right field that scored Nix. With the tying run on base, Barry Armitage fanned Corey Slavik to end the game and give the Wranglers the 10-8 win.
Despite the loss, the Drillers remain four games in front of second-place Arkansas in the East Division standings. The Travelers were 7-5 losers to Springfield on Thursday.
Tulsa and Wichita will continue their series Friday night at Drillers Stadium. The Wranglers will send Brian Bass (3-2, 5.59) to the mound, while the Drillers will counter with Scott Randall (2-3, 5.24). Game time will be 7:05PM.
