WPS Releases Revised 2010 Schedule

June 2, 2010 - Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) News Release

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (June 2, 2010) - Women's Professional Soccer released its revised schedule on Wednesday, six days after the Saint Louis Athletica shut down team operations. The remaining seven WPS teams - the same number that took part during the WPS Inaugural Season - will continue to play a 24-game regular season with added match-ups among the seven teams. With at least one team facing a bye each weekend due to an odd number of teams, an increased number of weeknight games will allow the regular season to finish by September 12. The four-team WPS Playoffs will remain during the regularly-scheduled week of September 19-26.

"Given the circumstances, we recognize that this affected all teams, as well as their fans," said Mary Harvey, WPS Chief Operating Officer. "We would like to thank all WPS fans for their support and the teams for their commitment to making this scheduling process an efficient one which enabled us to turn the revised schedule around in such a short period of time. Fans will have the benefit of some exciting weeknight games that have been added throughout the course of the summer and still have the opportunity to attend a total of 12 home games in their market this season."

The revised schedule took into account the six previously completed games that included Saint Louis Athletica, which will continue to count in the standings for those six WPS teams. Sky Blue FC were the only team to lose one home game as a result of the revised schedule, and will now play 11 home games throughout the course of the 2010 season. The Athletica have been officially removed from the league standings and the national television game on June 20 that was to be hosted in St. Louis has been canceled. The following week, WPS will feature the national television debut of FC Gold Pride's refurbished Pioneer Stadium at Cal State University, East Bay on Sunday, June 27 at 6pm ET/3pm PT against 2009 WPS Champions Sky Blue FC on Fox Soccer Channel.
