
World Cup Celebration with Orange County Blues

IRVINE, CA (June 6, 2014)- The Orange County Blues are excited to announce the appearances of US Soccer Legends Joy Fawcett and Paul Caligiuri at their World Soccer Celebration, Saturday June 7 at 7:00pm PST as they face Dayton Dutch Lions. Celebrate the Brazil World Cup with the Blues just five days before kick-off of the international tournament.
Paul Caligiuri is a retired US player and a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Caligiuri is best known for the "Shot Heard Around the World," his goal against Trinidad and Tobago in the 1989 World Cup Qualifier, sending the USA to its first World Cup in 40 years. The "Yanks" have been to every World Cup since.
Joy Fawcett is a retired US Women's National Team player, who earned 239 caps over her career winning 2 World Cups. In 2009, after playing every minute of three World Cups and winning two Olympic Gold Medals, Fawcett was elected into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
Fans in attendance on Saturday will have the opportunity to meet and get autographs from Caligiuri and Fawcett at halftime. In addition to having World Cup legends, the Blues will also have local teams participate in a flag procession, representing the 32 countries competing in Brazil. Fans will also have the opportunity to participate in a World Cup bracket challenge, with the grand prize being a personalized OC Blues jersey.
Coming into Saturday's match, the Blues sport a 4-7 record (12 pts) after defeating Arizona United SC in Irvine last weekend, 2-0. Allan Russell put Orange County ahead in the 15th minute, finishing a diving header in the box off a cross from Mehrshad Momeni. Mohammad Roknipour added a goal in second half stoppage time to seal the victory. Patrick McLain made seven saves, earning him a nod on the USL PRO Team of the Week, along with Russell.
Irvine is Dayton's first stop on their west coast road trip. They play Orange County on Saturday night before playing LA Galaxy II on Sunday night and Arizona United on Wednesday. The Dutch Lions come into Saturday's match with a 2-6-2 record (8 pts) after being defeated by the Rochester Rhinos on Sunday in Dayton, a match delayed by two and a half hours due to inclement weather. Dayton is the USL PRO affiliate of Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew, and currently has four players on loan from the big club: Matt Walker, Brad Stuver, Ross Friedman, and Aaron Schoenfeld.
